日本でもプレミアムリーグは人気ですね。
イギリス国内でももちろん、サッカー(football)は大人気です。
はたしてサッカーはどのようにできて、どのようにここまで世界的に広がったのでしょうか？

今日、世界で最も人気のあるスポーツがサッカーであることは間違いありません。
サッカーはいつ、どこで始まり、どのようにして今日の巨大なビジネスになったのでしょうか?
【最初にサッカーができたのは？イギリス？中国？】
ボールを蹴るゲームは、何千年にも渡って、世界中の多くの地域で認知されています。
中国、ギリシャ、ローマ、北アメリカなど、、、
遠く離れた国々はすべてそれぞれが、サッカー発祥の地であると主張しています。
【初期のサッカーは100人単位での試合、死者も出るほど！】
サッカーの原型は、イングランドとヨーロッパ各地で何百年もの間、
広くプレーされてきました。
しかしその形は今日の試合とは全然違いました。
街全体で行われており、何百人もの人々が参加していました。
非常に暴力的で、死をもたらす事すらありました。
そのため、無秩序なゲームを禁止する多くの試みがなされました。
例えば、1349 年にイングランド王エドワード 3 世はサッカーを禁止する法律を制定しました。
当時は王国の安全を守るために、弓矢の練習が必要でしたが、サッカーはその練習を妨げると考えたからです。
現代的なサッカーのゲームは、19 世紀にイギリスで登場しました。
英国サッカー協会は 1863 年に設立され、
1877 年までに統一されたゲームのルールを作成しました。

最初の国際サッカーの試合は、1872 年にイングランドとスコットランドの間で行われました。スポーツは急速に世界中に広がり、1904 年に国際サッカー連盟 (FIFA) が設立されました。
当初、国際サッカー大会はオリンピックと並行して組織されました。
最初の FIFA ワールド カップは 1930 年に開催されました。
それ以来、第二次世界大戦中を除いて 4 年ごとに開催されています。

なぜサッカーは人気があるのでしょうか？
サッカーは本当にとてもシンプルなゲームです。
必要なのは、ボール、おおよそ平らな地面、ゴールポストに使用するもの (2 枚のシャツでも十分です)、参加する数人だけです。
たとえ素足でもプレーでき、あらゆる種類のボールを使用できます。 天候は関係ありません – 暑くても寒くても、雨が降っても乾いていても、プレーすることができます。
したがって、お金持ちでも貧乏でも、すべてのレベルの人々が、少しの余裕があればいつでもプレイできるゲームです。高価な装備や大きなオープン スペースは必要ありません。

There is no doubt the most popular sport in the world today is football. When and where did football begin, and how did it become the huge business it is today?
Games which involve kicking a ball have been known in many parts of the world for thousands of years. Countries as far apart as China, Greece, Rome, and North America have all been claimed as the birthplace of football.
A kind of football was played widely in England and around Europe for hundreds of years. But it was very different from today’s game. It could involve hundreds of people in each team, and was played in the streets. It could be very violent, even causing deaths.
Many attempts were made to ban the game because of the disorder. For example, in 1349 King Edward III of England issued a law banning football because it distracted people from practising their skill with the bow and arrow, which was necessary to defend the kingdom.
The modern game of association football, or soccer, emerged in England in the 19th century. The English Football Association was founded in 1863 and by 1877 had produced an agreed set of rules for the game.
The first international football match was between England and Scotland in 1872. The sport quickly spread around the world, and the International Football Federation (FIFA) was founded in 1904.
At first, international football competitions were organised alongside the Olympic Games.
The first FIFA World Cup took place in 1930. Since then it has been held every 4 years, except during the Second World War.
Why is football so popular? Football is really a very simple game. All you need is a ball, a reasonably flat piece of ground, something to use for goalposts (a couple of shirts will do) and a few people to join in. You can play in bare feet, and any kind of ball can be used. The weather does not matter – hot or cold, wet or dry, you can still play.
So it is a game that people of all levels – rich or poor – can play whenever they can find a bit of room. There is no need for expensive equipment or big open spaces.

趣味は読書（歴史と探偵小説）とサッカー観戦（ハイバーニアンFC：スコットランドプレミアリーグと地元ナショナルリーグ ブロムリーのサポーター）
タイ出身の妻と子供二人、孫4人

Andrew George
I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1952. I went to school and University in Edinburgh, studying history. When I graduated, I moved to London to join the Diplomatic Service. I have served in Thailand (twice), Australia, Paraguay, Indonesia, and Anguilla (a British overseas territory in the Caribbean). I no longer work overseas, but I still work part-time for the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in London.
My main interests are reading (mostly history and detective stories) and watching football (I follow my hometown team, Hibernian, in the Scottish Premier League, and the local team where I live, Bromley, in the English National League).
I have been married for 44 years. My wife, Watanalak, is from Thailand. We have two children and four grandchildren. Our daughter, Arada, lives in England, and our son, Michael, in Japan. Each has two children.
